2012-2013 SCMS Summer Reading List for 9th grade Honors Language Arts And Geography

You MUST read the first 3 books and choose 2 from the list below

Many of these books can be found in the Media Center in many formats. (Kindles, Playaways, Books) Please come in and check out what we have!

 

1. Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody (must read) Non-fiction

A story about a woman who marries an Iranian man that takes her to Iran and plans to keep her and their daughter there. It is her story of how she escaped with her daughter.

 

2. Good Earth by Pearl Buck (must read) Fiction

The story of China before the vast political and social upheavals transformed an essentially agrarian country into the world power it is today.

 

3. Crossing the Wire by Will Hobbs (must read) Fiction

The story is about a 15 year old boy that crosses from Mexico into the U.S. illegally seeking a better life.

 

The three books above must be read and all pages of the literature log filled in. In addition to these 3 books you must choose 2 more from the list below. The literature log must be filled in but the last geography page may not apply to the book you choose so it can be left out. All books have a lexile of 1000 or above.

  • The Story of My Life by Helen Keller Nonfiction
  • Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell (geography can be used here) Fiction
  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott Fiction
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Fiction
