8th and 9th grade honor class and CE requirements

SCMS HONORS APPLICATION PROCESS

To qualify for 8th grade Honors classes, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic and Effort grades need to be a “B” or higher for Honors Language Arts and Honors U.S. History
  • Academic and Effort grades need to be an “A” for Honors Math
  • Must have good attendance

To qualify for Honors Language Arts 9 or Honors Geography, students must meet the following criteria:

  • To qualify for Honors Language Arts 9, students must meet the following criteria:

    • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in Language Arts 8.

    • Pass all of your 8th grade classes.

To qualify for Honors Secondary Mathematics 1 students must meet the following criteria:

  • 8th grade Mathematics students must maintain an A- or higher for 3 out of the 4 quarters.
  • 8th grade Math Honors students must maintain a B- or higher for all 4 quarters.
  • Must have current math teacher recommendation for both 8th grade  and Honors math students.
  • Receive an Initial Knowledge check score of 250 topics or higher on ALEKS.
    • Placement subject to review after Initial Knowledge check assessment given the first of their 9th grade school year.
  • Have acceptable behavior and attendance

To qualify for Honors Biology students must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have maintained a B+ or higher in 8th Grade science.
  • Must meet all requirements for Honors Secondary Math 1
  • Students must also be enrolled in Honors Secondary Math 1 in order to be successful in the Snow Canyon honors science track.

To remain in the Honors program during the 9th grade year students must meet the following criteria.

  • Maintain a grade of  “B” or better in the Honors class
  • Maintain acceptable behavior
    • Maintain “H’s” or “S’s” for citizenship grades
    • Maintain acceptable attendance
    • No administrative referrals for discipline

To qualify for a Concurrent Enrollment (CE) course students need to meet the following requirements:

  • 3.5 overall GPA
  • Good Attendance
  • Grades B or higher in content area
  • Example – For CE Business Office Specialist students need B or higher in Business Digital Literacy during 8th grade.
